Technical Production Workflow

The 8 Stages of Felt Production

Every product at Felt & Wool Craft passes through our documented, stage-by-stage quality control process in Kathmandu.

01
100% Pure Fleece

Raw Wool Sourcing & Sorting

We exclusively import 100% natural, cruelty-free sheep wool from New Zealand. Wool fibers are sorted by micron grade, fiber length, and natural whiteness, ensuring superior elasticity and consistent wet-felting performance.

02
Uniform Density

Carding & Fiber Web Preparation

Clean fleece passes through mechanical carders that gently comb and align the natural crimp into uniform wool batts and roving webs. This forms the smooth, knot-free foundation required for tight, uniform felting.

03
80+ Pantone Shades

Eco-Friendly AZO-Free Dyeing

Carded wool is dyed in temperature-controlled vats using non-toxic, certified AZO-free dyes. We maintain a library of 80+ permanent shades and custom-match any Pantone reference code with excellent wash and light fastness.

04
Hand-Interlocked Fibers

Traditional Wet Felting & Rolling

The core technique: wool fibers are layered with warm water and natural soap, then hand-massaged, pressed, and rolled. The physical agitation causes microscopic wool scales to permanently interlock into a dense, seamless matrix.

05
Artisan Sculpting

Precision Needle Felting & Sculpting

For intricate 3D shapes, animal ornaments, and decorative detailing, artisans use barbed felting needles. By repeatedly puncturing fibers, they sculpt firm contours, facial features, and multi-colored surface patterns.

06
Reinforced Assembly

Hand Stitching & Structural Assembly

Complex items like felt ball rugs, baskets, and multi-piece bags are assembled using heavy-duty, high-tensile nylon thread and reinforced saddle stitching, guaranteeing years of heavy structural endurance.

07
Pre-Shipment QC

Multi-Stage Quality Inspection

Every finished piece undergoes strict inspection: calibrated diameter and weight checks, seam tension testing, color uniformity assessment, and moisture testing before moving to packaging.

08
Retail & FBA Ready

Private Labeling, Packaging & Export

Approved pieces receive custom woven labels, barcode hangtags, or custom screen-printed cotton bags. They are moisture-sealed in poly-liners and packed into heavy-duty 7-ply export cartons for air or sea shipment.

Material Integrity

Raw Material Selection & Ethical Chemistry

Superior felt begins with superior wool. We source our fleece exclusively from certified New Zealand farms known for ethical shearing practices and long-staple fibers.

Quality Assurance Protocol

Our Multi-Stage Inspection Standards

Dimensional Caliper ToleranceFelt balls and dryer balls are checked with calipers to ensure strict diameter and weight conformance across bulk batches.
Colorfastness & Hue VerificationDyed lots are compared against master Pantone chips under standardized daylight lamps to avoid batch variations.
Needle Stitch & Seam TensionRugs and baskets are subjected to tensile pulling tests to confirm stitch integrity and thread knot security.
Moisture Content & Oven-DryingBefore carton packing, products are thoroughly sun-dried or heat-dried to maintain under 12% relative moisture, preventing mold during maritime transit.
